The Skin and The Gut

In this episode, we explore the interrelationship between diseases affecting the gut and the skin, in other words, cutaneous manifestations of gastrointestinal disease.

We discuss the pathophysiology of coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease and common skin conditions such as acne and explore how and why these conditions clinically manifest in the skin.

Our panel of experts for this episode includes renowned gastroenterologist, Dr Luke Crantock and dermatologist, A/Prof Alvin Chong alongside our host, GP, Dr Laxmi Yengar.

Dr Luke Crantock

Dr Luke Crantock is a renowned gastroenterologist who works under his own practice, the Centre for GI Health in Berwick, south-east of Melbourne. Alongside working with several patients each day in a consulting sense, he also operates out of his endoscopy centre named GIH Access Endoscopy, where his goal is to provide accessible endoscopy services to patients in need. 

 Luke’s passion for medicine is evident in his consistent approach to his own podcast called Everyday Medicine, a doctor-focused podcast that showcases conversations with colleagues providing helpful ideas and advice in healthcare. He has published nearly 150 episodes and has a large population of regular listeners.

Graduated from the University of Tasmania and completed advanced training in Gastroenterology at the Royal Brisbane Hospital, FRACP 1991. Subsequently continued training at the Royal Edinburgh Infirmary, John Radcliffe Infirmary (Oxford) and Edouard Herriot Hospital in Lyon where he focused on ERCP diagnostic techniques.

Luke has been offering interventional endoscopy for over 25 years. He is passionate about patient care and managing digestive health. He is highly regarded for his technical ability and his compassionate approach to patients.

Luke’s special interests within gastroenterology include bowel cancer prevention and screening, coeliac disease, Barret’s oesophagus, ERCP, video capsule endoscopy (PillCam) and carbohydrate breath testing.
