Oncology and the Skin

Over the past decades, oncologists have developed an armament of incredible new anti-cancer medications. Unfortunately, these impressive medications also have an impressive list of side effects, many of which affect the skin.

In this episode, we explore these adverse effects alongside dermatologist A/Prof Michelle Goh and oncologist Dr Luke McLean.

We would like to thank our Institute Partner, Melbourne Pathology, for their support of the Spot Diagnosis Podcast and our podcast season partner, Leo Pharma.

DR LUKE MCLEAN

Luke McLean is a medical oncologist and clinician scientist at St Vincent’s Hospital (Melbourne) and Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, where he subspecialises in tumours of the head and neck, thyroid, and skin/melanoma. He graduated from Monash University with Honours and was awarded the prestigious Harry Hindlip Green Scholarship on completion of his studies. Luke is also a member of the Head and Neck Translational Laboratory at Peter Mac where he completed a PhD investigating immunotherapy resistance in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma. He is the recipient of a 2022 National Health and Medical Research Council Post-graduate scholarship and received the Robert Kirby Peter Mac Foundation Post-graduate award (2022) to support his research.

Luke’s current research focuses on the complex dynamics of immunotherapy resistance and response in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, a malignancy for which Australia has one of the highest rates globally. He seeks to unravel the molecular and immunological factors that dictate therapeutic outcomes, aiming to identify why certain tumours exhibit responsiveness to immunotherapy while others remain refractory. Moreover, he is particularly dedicated to refining immunotherapeutic strategies for high-risk populations, including immunocompromised individuals such as solid organ transplant recipients, to enhance treatment efficacy and improve patient outcomes.
